This review looks at the Vango Oakmere 600 TC XL tent. Winner in the 2020 Poled Family Tent Awards by Camping Magazine. As we look at this tent you can see why it won such an award. Not only does it offer lots of space for your family it is also made with rich luxurious fabric and has lots of additional features to make any holiday more comfortable and enjoyable for the whole family.
This family tent from Vango has been designed with the family holiday in mind. From the Luxury feel of the fabric and sewn in groundsheet that will keep you dry and comfortable as well as protected from the sun to the storage pockets to allow you to keep your favourite things close to hand.
The Oakmere tent is spacious, sleeping up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms. A large living area and pre-attached awning give you plenty of room to enjoy your time inside the should the weather turn or on an evening to catch up about your day’s activities or have some time enjoying family games before settling for the night. The darkened bedrooms allow you to get adequate sleep no matter what time of year it is by keeping the sun out and stopping the rooms from becoming too hot.
The tent has 3 lantern hanging points in the living areas allowing you to place plenty of lighting around the tent.
Structure: Vango PowerFlex®, pre-angled poles allow additional height and extra rigidity against winds.
Guy Lines: Pre-attached guy lines
Fabric: Made with Vango’s Polycotton Sentinel Signature fabric, allowing great breathability. This tent fabric will adjust to the weather to give you the most comfortable camping experience. The fabric has a UV protection factor of 50 and also uses ColorLoc () to protect the fabric from fading and weakening under UV rays from the sun,
Cable Entry: Yes there is a cable entry zipped pocket on side of the tent next to the bedrooms and also a cable entry zipped pocket from the main living area into the attached awning area.
Windows: this tent has 5 large windows in the main living area and 2 in the awning. All windows in the living area have roll away privacy curtains. These are secured with toggles when closed for privacy or rolled away neatly below the window.
Doors: You can enter this tent from both the front and back. A large awning door can be opened up and a separate door from the awning into the main living area gives this tent an open and airy feel for those great summer days we love when camping. If the weather is poor or if you want to utilize the extra space more you can use the side entrance door. Only the door from awning into the main living area has a mesh door that can be used independently of the fabric door.
Ventilation: The Oakmere has both high and low ventilation panels to allow good airflow throughout the tent. This teamed with the poly-cotton fabric will minimize condensation build-up, keeping the inside of your tent dry.
Bedrooms: These bedrooms are made with Vango’s Midnight Fabric. This helps minimize light entering the sleeping areas to allow for a more restful night’s sleep. It will also keep the rooms a few degrees cooler on warm summer days. There are 3 queen-sized bedrooms to the rear of this tent. The queen size rooms give each person (if used by the maximum 6 people) 60cm wide sleeping areas. These bedrooms have sewn-in storage pockets and the dividers can be removed, allowing you to create a large master room or divide the back into a sleeping area and toilet/dressing area. These bedrooms also have larger entrances with a lowered entry point to save trips when entering or exiting the rooms.
Living Area: The living area provides a great space to relax inside and with the pre-attached awning this space almost doubles. The awning, however, does not have a sewn-in groundsheet as the main living area does. There are lantern hanging points in both areas. The awning would make a great kitchen/dining area as the large front opening will provide great ventilation and keep you dry if having to cook when it’s raining. (NB. you should never cook inside your main tent and always keep hot items and naked flames well away from tent sides and ceilings.)
The living area has a double TBS®II system, meaning that you have 2 sets of tension bands to help brace your tent if the weather turns a little nasty.
Optional Extras: Optional extras include groundsheet protector/footprint, carpet, family shelter, and king poles. It is always worth looking for a package deal when buying a tent where the footprint and carpet are included as this often saves you money.

We really liked the Vango Oakmere 600 TC XL as it ticks plenty of the boxes in what we look for in a tent. It is clear to see why this tent won the Editors Choice Award from Camping Magazine. We love the spacious bedrooms and large living areas, giving this tent a great livability factor for families. The darkened bedrooms have quickly become a requirement that we look for in a tent and is a great feature in this tent. After all, when on holiday not everyone wants to be up with the birds and this feature allows you to indulge in the odd long lie or help get the kiddies to sleep a little earlier if you want to enjoy some chill time as a couple.
The richness of the poly cotton fabric gives this tent a great finish. The pitching time for the size of this poled tent is great allowing you to spend more time as a family and enjoying your break together. And the versatility of the pre-attached awning is great. Whether you use it as a storage area, extra living area or a kitchen/diner you will appreciate the extra space it provides.
