Hi and welcome to my review of the Vango Hudson 500. We purchased this tent early in the season to replace our Freedom Trail Sendero tent. We loved the Sendero but wanted that little bit of extra room and a covered entry point so when it was raining the inside of the tent was not going to get wet with us going in and out.

We found exactly what we wanted in this tent along with some extras. We took it on a wild camp for 1 night for a test pitch at Loch Doon and was pretty impressed, here’s what we found.
The tent, as expected from Vango is of good quality and design. We love the herbal green colour as it blends in with the surroundings easier. This tent was easy to pitch even on the first outing and the canopy area gives more shelter than I thought it would.
Although this tent is sold as a 5 person the same as the Sendero we had it certainly was more spacious, both in the living area and bedroom area.
Once pitched the tent is very stable and if the weather does turn the tent is further stabilized by the external storm anchors and interior tension band system.
The living area is of good size with cable entry, light hanging points and large windows for panoramic views and lots of light. The main door to the front of the living area has a fully integrated fly mesh door to allow even more air in during good weather and if the weather turns the living area will allow you to spend your time in the tent comfortably with plenty of room.
The front canopy, which was larger than I had anticipated gives good shelter to sit under later in the evening and will also help keep the rain out when getting in and out the tent in wet weather. This even means if it is a day of warm, muggy, summer showers you could leave the main door open and use the fly mesh screen to allow a little more comfort when sitting inside.
The bedroom area is a bonus with this tent as the divider can be fully removed, this is how we like it if just ourselves, or it has 2 options for dividing the area. You can divide straight down the middle and have 2 good sized doubles or slightly off centre to give a 3 + 2 sleeping arrangement.
Packing away was a breeze both because we were able to leave the bedrooms in situ and the fact it comes in an oversized bag, so you don’t need to be exact when rolling up. We were able to reduce the size once tent was in bag by taking some more air out and tightening the bag straps.
Structure – Tent has 3 angled fibreglass poles and another for creating the canopy area. These angled poles allow for some additional height at the side of the tent.
Guy Lines – Tent comes with pre-attached guy lines which helps to steady the tent in bad weather conditions.
This tent also has storm anchors for additional stability in adverse weather conditions.
Fabrics – The tent is made of 70 Denier polyester having a 4000 HH flysheet. The tent also has a fully sewn in groundsheet.
Cable Entry – The Hudson has EHU cable entry point.
Windows – This tent has 4 very large windows giving panoramic views on 3 sides of the tent letting light flood in and giving you the best views possible. Windows are made with Vango’s Diamond Clear technology and all have privacy curtains that can be both halves closed or fully closed and toggle away neatly when not in use.
Doors – The Hudson has 1 door to the front of the tent. This has an integrated fly mesh door which can be used on its own to allow plenty of fresh air.
Ventilation – Lots of ventilation throughout tent with ventilation panels under windows and to the rear of the tent behind sleeping area.
Bedrooms – Tent has 2 x bedrooms to the rear of the tent. Bedrooms are made from Vango’s lights out inner material. This means dark sleeping areas no matter what time of day or night it is. This also helps with temperatures, keeping them cool on hot days and warmer on cold nights.
The bedroom divider can be moved to either create 1 larger and 1 smaller room, 2 equal sized rooms or taken out altogether for 1 large room.
Living Area – The Hudson has a very spacious living area with a full panoramic view due to windows. Light hanging points, Vango’s tension band system for added stability in adverse weather, these tuck away neatly into their own pockets.
Optional Extras: these tents have both footprints and carpets as optional extras and can be purchased a little cheaper if you buy as a bundle with the tent.
